Hon-kesa-gatame
Hon-kesa-gatame is the foundation scarf hold. From Uke's side, Tori controls the head and near arm, keeps the chest connected to Uke's upper body, and uses a wide, responsive base to prevent turning or bridging.

Movement sequence
- Sit close beside Uke with your hip near the armpit, facing toward Uke's head.
- Encircle the head with one arm and trap the near arm securely against your ribs with the other.
- Spread the legs for balance, keep Uke's shoulders controlled, and adjust your weight as Uke moves.
- Keep the pressure responsive rather than rigid, protect Uke's face and breathing, and release when Mate is called.
Safety and training context
Use this page to prepare for coached practice, not as a substitute for instruction. Throws, locks, and strangles require appropriate experience, a qualified partner, safe matting, and direct supervision.
