Kami-shiho-gatame

Kami-shiho-gatame is an upper four-quarter hold applied from beyond Uke's head. Tori reaches under both shoulders to secure the belt or jacket, draws Uke's upper body in, and pins the shoulders with low chest pressure and a stable base.

Movement sequence

  1. Approach from above Uke's head with both knees or feet positioned symmetrically for balance.
  2. Reach beneath both arms and secure the belt or jacket near the waist.
  3. Pull Uke toward your chest, keep your hips low, and widen or shift the base to answer bridges.
  4. Keep the pressure responsive rather than rigid, protect Uke's face and breathing, and release when Mate is called.
