Tate-shiho-gatame

Tate-shiho-gatame is a vertical four-quarter hold. Tori lies chest-to-chest astride Uke, controls Uke's head and one arm, and uses the legs to contain Uke's lower body while keeping the hips low and centered.

Movement sequence

  1. Move into a balanced mount with both knees close to Uke's sides and your weight centered.
  2. Encircle Uke's head and near arm, joining the hands or securing the jacket so the shoulders cannot turn freely.
  3. Lower the chest and hips while the legs follow Uke's bridging motion without crossing the feet dangerously.
  4. Keep the pressure responsive rather than rigid, protect Uke's face and breathing, and release when Mate is called.
