Yoko-shiho-gatame

Yoko-shiho-gatame is a side four-quarter hold. Tori lies across Uke at roughly a right angle, controls the far upper body with an under-head grip, and reaches between Uke's legs to secure the belt or trousers while pinning the torso with the chest.

Movement sequence

  1. Kneel close to Uke's side with your chest crossing the ribs and your hips low.
  2. Pass one arm under the head to the far collar or shoulder and the other between the legs to the belt or trousers.
  3. Draw the four corners inward, spread your base, and keep chest pressure centered as Uke tries to turn.
  4. Keep the pressure responsive rather than rigid, protect Uke's face and breathing, and release when Mate is called.
