Kata-gatame
Kata-gatame is a shoulder hold. From Uke's side, Tori presses one of Uke's arms beside Uke's head, encircles the trapped arm and neck with both arms, and applies low chest and shoulder pressure while extending the base away from Uke.

Movement sequence
- Move Uke's near arm across the face so the upper arm lies beside the neck, not across the mouth.
- Encircle Uke's head and trapped arm, join your hands, and place your head low beside Uke's head.
- Walk the feet away and settle chest pressure while keeping Uke's far shoulder from turning.
- Keep the pressure responsive rather than rigid, protect Uke's face and breathing, and release when Mate is called.
Safety and training context
