Uki-gatame

Uki-gatame is a floating hold. From Uke's side, Tori controls the near arm and uses one bent leg across the upper torso while extending the other leg backward to create a mobile, balanced pin.

Movement sequence

  1. Secure Uke's near arm and position yourself beside the shoulder rather than directly over the abdomen.
  2. Place the controlling leg across Uke's upper torso with measured pressure and extend the other leg for balance.
  3. Keep your weight mobile and the shoulders controlled without driving the knee into the ribs or solar plexus.
  4. Keep the pressure responsive rather than rigid, protect Uke's face and breathing, and release when Mate is called.
