Ushiro-kesa-gatame

Ushiro-kesa-gatame is a reverse scarf hold. From Uke's side, Tori faces toward Uke's legs, controls the near arm and upper body, and uses the back and side of the torso with a wide base to keep Uke's shoulders pinned.

Movement sequence

  1. Sit beside Uke facing the legs with your hip close to the near shoulder.
  2. Control the near arm and secure the far upper body or belt line with your other arm.
  3. Spread the legs and settle your back and ribs across Uke's chest while following bridges.
  4. Keep the pressure responsive rather than rigid, protect Uke's face and breathing, and release when Mate is called.
