Ashi-garami

Ashi-garami is a leg entanglement and knee lock. In the classical form, Tori wraps one leg around Uke's leg from the outside and below, then uses the entanglement and hip line to pressure the knee. It is prohibited in shiai and must not be applied in randori.

Movement sequence

  1. Study the classical position only with a qualified instructor and a fully cooperative partner.
  2. The defining control wraps Tori's leg around Uke's captured leg while the foot and knee are immobilized.
  3. Do not torque or extend the knee in free practice; this prohibited technique can cause severe injury.
  4. Apply only under qualified supervision, increase pressure gradually, and release immediately when Uke taps.
