Ashi-guruma

Ashi-guruma is a leg wheel. Tori breaks Uke's balance forward, turns across the line of movement, places a mostly straight leg against Uke's lower thigh or knee area, and rotates Uke around that leg as an axis.

Movement sequence

  1. Draw Uke toward the front corner and turn so your hips stay clear rather than loading Uke fully.
  2. Place the extended leg across Uke's lower thigh near the knee with the joint protected.
  3. Continue the hand and torso rotation so Uke wheels over the leg instead of being kicked.
  4. Maintain the controlling grip, guide Uke to a safe landing, and practise the action under qualified supervision.
