O-soto-gari

O-soto-gari is a major outer reap. Tori breaks Uke's balance backward, closes the upper-body space, and reaps Uke's weighted leg from the outside while driving the torso backward and down.

Movement sequence

  1. Move Uke's weight onto the heel of the leg you intend to reap.
  2. Step the support foot close to the outside of that leg and align your chest and head over a stable base.
  3. Reap through Uke's leg from the outside as the hands and torso direct Uke backward, then control the landing.
  4. Maintain the controlling grip, guide Uke to a safe landing, and practise the action under qualified supervision.
