Ko-soto-gake

Ko-soto-gake is a minor outer hook. Tori breaks Uke's balance backward, hooks the outside of Uke's loaded foot or lower leg, and drives the upper body over the trapped support.

Movement sequence

  1. Shift Uke's weight onto the heel of the foot you intend to hook.
  2. Step close and place your hooking foot behind the outside of Uke's heel or lower leg.
  3. Keep the hook connected while the hands and chest drive Uke backward and down.
  4. Maintain the controlling grip, guide Uke to a safe landing, and practise the action under qualified supervision.
