De-ashi-barai
De-ashi-barai is an advancing-foot sweep. Tori times Uke's moving foot just as it is about to accept or release weight, sweeps it sideways with the sole, and coordinates the hands to turn Uke into the empty space.

Movement sequence
- Move with Uke and read the instant the advancing foot is light enough to slide.
- Sweep across the heel or outer ankle with the sole of your foot rather than kicking.
- Turn the sleeve and lapel in the same direction so Uke's upper body continues beyond the swept foot.
- Maintain the controlling grip, guide Uke to a safe landing, and practise the action under qualified supervision.
Safety and training context
