Hane-goshi-gaeshi

Hane-goshi-gaeshi counters hane-goshi. Tori blocks or avoids the springing action, then attacks Uke's pivot leg from the outside with a reap or hook while directing Uke backward.

Movement sequence

  1. Lower your center and keep Uke from loading you fully during the hane-goshi entry.
  2. Reach the outside of Uke's supporting leg with your free leg and establish a reap or hook.
  3. Remove the pivot leg while the grips turn Uke backward and down.
  4. Maintain the controlling grip, guide Uke to a safe landing, and practise the action under qualified supervision.
