Harai-goshi-gaeshi

Harai-goshi-gaeshi counters a right harai-goshi. Tori prevents the hip load, hooks the left leg around Uke's lower left support leg from behind, and reaps that pivot leg to throw Uke backward.

Movement sequence

  1. Lower your center and keep space at the hip as Uke turns for harai-goshi.
  2. Keep Uke's sweeping right leg distinct from the standing left leg you are countering.
  3. Hook your left leg around Uke's lower left leg from behind and reap while reversing the grips.
  4. Maintain the controlling grip, guide Uke to a safe landing, and practise the action under qualified supervision.
