Harai-goshi

Harai-goshi is a sweeping hip throw. Tori breaks Uke's balance forward, loads Uke onto the back of the hip, and sweeps Uke's outer thigh with a long, rising leg action while the upper body continues to rotate.

Movement sequence

  1. Lift and draw Uke forward so the chest and hips can connect without leaning back.
  2. Turn across Uke with the support leg stable and the hip placed beneath Uke's center.
  3. Sweep upward through Uke's thigh with a mostly straight leg as the hands rotate Uke forward and down.
  4. Maintain the controlling grip, guide Uke to a safe landing, and practise the action under qualified supervision.
