Hiza-gatame (ground)

This ground variation of Ude-hishigi-hiza-gatame uses the knee as the fulcrum while both judoka are in ne-waza. Tori immobilizes Uke's shoulder and wrist, aligns the elbow against the knee, and extends the arm gradually without dropping weight onto the joint.

Movement sequence

  1. From a stable ground position, isolate Uke's arm and keep the shoulder from rotating.
  2. Place the inside of your knee precisely beneath or against the elbow while controlling the wrist with both hands.
  3. Remove space and extend the arm slowly across the knee, stopping immediately at the tap.
  4. Apply only under qualified supervision, increase pressure gradually, and release immediately when Uke taps.
