Kata-ha-jime

Kataha-jime is a single-wing strangle from behind. Tori grips across Uke's neck with one hand, threads the other arm beneath Uke's armpit and behind the neck to lift and contain the arm, then combines the collar pull with forearm pressure.

Movement sequence

  1. From behind, take a deep cross-collar grip so the lapel lies along the side of Uke's neck.
  2. Thread the free arm beneath Uke's armpit and place the back of that hand or forearm behind the neck.
  3. Lift the trapped arm while drawing the collar hand back in a controlled line; release immediately at the tap.
  4. Apply only under qualified supervision, monitor Uke continuously, and release immediately when Uke taps.
