Kawazu-gake

Kawazu-gake entangles one leg around Uke's leg from the inside and takes Uke backward while lifting the trapped leg. It is prohibited in shiai because the entanglement can place severe rotational force on the knee.

Movement sequence

  1. Study the position for recognition only under a qualified instructor.
  2. The defining action wraps the attacking leg around Uke's leg from the inside while the bodies remain close.
  3. Do not complete the backward fall or leg lift in randori; the technique is prohibited and high risk.
  4. Maintain the controlling grip, guide Uke to a safe landing, and practise the action under qualified supervision.
