Tani-otoshi

Tani-otoshi is a valley drop. Tori breaks Uke's balance backward or toward a rear corner, slides a leg behind Uke without attacking the knee, and falls to the side while pulling Uke into the open space.

Movement sequence

  1. Move beside Uke and direct the balance toward the rear corner.
  2. Slide your near leg along the mat behind both of Uke's legs, keeping it clear of the knees.
  3. Drop to your side and guide Uke backward over the space behind the heels while controlling the sleeve.
  4. Maintain the controlling grip, guide Uke to a safe landing, and practise the action under qualified supervision.
