O-soto-gaeshi

O-soto-gaeshi counters o-soto-gari. Tori stabilizes the attacked leg, keeps Uke from completing the reap, and counter-reaps Uke's supporting leg with the leg that Uke attacked while reversing the upper-body pressure.

Movement sequence

  1. Brace and keep your posture as Uke enters o-soto-gari, preventing your weight from passing behind the heel.
  2. Use the attacked leg to catch and reap Uke's supporting leg from the outside.
  3. Reverse the grips and chest pressure so Uke is driven backward as the support is removed.
  4. Maintain the controlling grip, guide Uke to a safe landing, and practise the action under qualified supervision.
