Obi-tori-gaeshi

Obi-tori-gaeshi is a belt-grip reversal. Tori reaches over Uke's shoulder to secure the belt, controls an arm or leg with the other hand, lifts Uke close, and turns Uke over the shoulder or side.

Movement sequence

  1. Secure a deep over-the-shoulder belt grip and draw Uke's bent posture close.
  2. Control Uke's near arm or leg with the free hand and position your hips beneath the load.
  3. Lift and rotate Uke over the shoulder line while maintaining both controls to the mat.
  4. Maintain the controlling grip, guide Uke to a safe landing, and practise the action under qualified supervision.
