Seoi-otoshi

Seoi-otoshi is a shoulder drop. Tori breaks Uke's balance forward, fits beneath the controlled arm as for seoi-nage, and drops to one or both knees while pulling Uke forward over the back.

Movement sequence

  1. Draw Uke forward and fit the throwing-side arm tightly beneath Uke's armpit.
  2. Turn fully with your back connected, then lower one or both knees without collapsing the spine.
  3. Pull and rotate Uke over the shoulder line while preserving the controlled arm through the landing.
  4. Maintain the controlling grip, guide Uke to a safe landing, and practise the action under qualified supervision.
