Tai-otoshi

Tai-otoshi is a hand technique in which Tori breaks Uke's balance forward, turns across the line of movement, and extends a leg in front of Uke's advancing leg. The throw is produced by coordinated hand action and body rotation, not by lifting Uke on the hip.

Movement sequence

  1. Draw Uke toward the front corner and keep Uke moving onto the toes.
  2. Turn in with the hips clear of Uke and place the extended throwing leg across Uke's path with the knee protected.
  3. Rotate the torso and drive the sleeve-and-lapel action forward and down over the open space beyond the leg.
  4. Maintain the controlling grip, guide Uke to a safe landing, and practise the action under qualified supervision.
