Okuri-ashi-harai

Okuri-ashi-harai is a sliding-foot sweep. While moving Uke sideways, Tori times the moment Uke's feet draw together and sweeps both feet in the direction of travel as the hands tip the upper body sideways.

Movement sequence

  1. Move laterally in rhythm with Uke and encourage the trailing foot to close toward the leading foot.
  2. Sweep the ankles with the sole at the instant both feet are light and nearly together.
  3. Continue the lateral hand action so Uke's torso travels with the swept feet into a controlled fall.
  4. Maintain the controlling grip, guide Uke to a safe landing, and practise the action under qualified supervision.
