Seoi-nage

Seoi-nage is a shoulder throw. Tori breaks Uke's balance forward, inserts the lapel-side elbow beneath Uke's armpit, turns the back close under Uke's chest, and throws by extending the legs and rotating forward.

Movement sequence

  1. Lift and pull Uke forward until the weight moves onto the toes.
  2. Turn under the lapel-side arm, fit your elbow beneath Uke's armpit, and connect your back to Uke.
  3. Extend from the legs and rotate the shoulders forward and down while maintaining sleeve control.
  4. Maintain the controlling grip, guide Uke to a safe landing, and practise the action under qualified supervision.
