Sukui-nage

Sukui-nage is a scooping throw. Tori moves behind or beside Uke, breaks the balance backward, scoops one or both thighs or the hips with the arms, and lifts and turns Uke to the mat without loading Uke onto the hip.

Movement sequence

  1. Step behind Uke while controlling the upper body and directing the balance backward.
  2. Pass your arms around the thighs or hip line and keep your own posture upright and close.
  3. Lift with the legs, turn your torso, and guide Uke down while keeping clear of the head.
  4. Maintain the controlling grip, guide Uke to a safe landing, and practise the action under qualified supervision.
