Sumi-gaeshi

Sumi-gaeshi is a corner reversal. Tori draws a forward-bent Uke close, falls backward, and lifts the inside of Uke's thigh with the lower leg so Uke turns over a rear corner rather than straight over the head.

Movement sequence

  1. Use a lapel, over-back, or belt-area grip to keep Uke's upper body close and loaded forward.
  2. Sit beneath Uke and place your lifting lower leg against the inside of Uke's thigh.
  3. Roll backward and lift toward the corner while the hands steer Uke diagonally to a controlled landing.
  4. Maintain the controlling grip, guide Uke to a safe landing, and practise the action under qualified supervision.
