Tomoe-nage

Tomoe-nage is a circular rear sacrifice throw. Tori breaks Uke's balance forward, sits close beneath Uke's center, places the sole on the lower abdomen or belt line, and extends the leg while rolling Uke overhead.

Movement sequence

  1. Draw Uke forward until the weight comes over the toes and keep both grips connected.
  2. Sit close to Uke's feet and place the ball of one foot safely on the lower abdomen or belt line.
  3. Roll onto your back and extend the leg upward as the hands guide Uke in a smooth arc beyond your head.
  4. Maintain the controlling grip, guide Uke to a safe landing, and practise the action under qualified supervision.
