Tawara-gaeshi

Tawara-gaeshi is a rice-bale reversal against a deep, bent attack. Tori leans over Uke, wraps and lifts the upper body with both arms, then falls backward to roll Uke over the shoulder.

Movement sequence

  1. Sprawl or lower your hips against Uke's deep entry and wrap the torso from above.
  2. Draw Uke tightly upward against your chest while keeping the head clear of the mat.
  3. Fall backward and turn over one shoulder so Uke rolls beyond you to a controlled landing.
  4. Maintain the controlling grip, guide Uke to a safe landing, and practise the action under qualified supervision.
