Tsubame-gaeshi

Tsubame-gaeshi is a counter to a foot sweep. Tori lifts or withdraws the attacked foot so Uke's sweep passes, then immediately uses that same foot to sweep Uke's attacking leg while the hands reverse Uke's balance.

Movement sequence

  1. Read the incoming sweep and remove the attacked foot just enough for it to miss.
  2. Return the same foot immediately against Uke's sweeping ankle while it is still light.
  3. Reverse the sleeve-and-lapel action in time with the counter-sweep and guide the landing.
  4. Maintain the controlling grip, guide Uke to a safe landing, and practise the action under qualified supervision.
