Uchi-mata-gaeshi

Uchi-mata-gaeshi counters uchi-mata. Tori blocks or avoids the inner-thigh lift, then reaps or hooks Uke's pivot leg from the outside while turning Uke backward or to the side.

Movement sequence

  1. Keep a low, stable base as Uke enters and prevent your hips from being lifted cleanly.
  2. Let the sweeping leg pass or contain it, then reach the outside of Uke's supporting leg.
  3. Reap or hook the pivot leg while the grips redirect Uke into the open rear corner.
  4. Maintain the controlling grip, guide Uke to a safe landing, and practise the action under qualified supervision.
