Utsuri-goshi

Utsuri-goshi is a hip-shift counter. Tori stops Uke's turning throw with lowered hips, lifts Uke close, shifts the hips across beneath Uke while Uke is elevated, and completes a hip throw in the opposite direction.

Movement sequence

  1. Lower your center and close around Uke's waist as the attacking hip throw begins.
  2. Lift Uke vertically with the legs and hips while keeping the torso close.
  3. Shift your hips across beneath Uke and rotate into the counter throw with controlled sleeve support.
  4. Maintain the controlling grip, guide Uke to a safe landing, and practise the action under qualified supervision.
