Yoko-gake

Yoko-gake is a side hook sacrifice throw. Tori loads Uke onto the outer edge of one foot, sweeps that ankle sideways with the sole, and falls to the same side while the hands drive Uke flat into the open space.

Movement sequence

  1. Shift Uke's weight toward the little-toe edge of the foot you will attack.
  2. Place the sole against the outside of Uke's ankle and begin the sideways sweep.
  3. Fall to your side in time with the sweep and turn Uke's upper body into a controlled side landing.
  4. Maintain the controlling grip, guide Uke to a safe landing, and practise the action under qualified supervision.
